A couple of days ago I saw on Oprah Winfrey’s page on Facebook, her interview with Paulo Coelho, the Brazilian author of so many best sellers including The Alchemist. The Alchemist has sold 65 million copies and has been on The New York Times bestseller list for more than 315 weeks. It’s also been translated into 80 different languages, setting the Guinness World Record for the most translated book by any living author. I remember when I was a teenager that my best friend José Júnior brought this book to our high school and showed it to me with the enthusiasm of a little child doing treat or trick. He was fascinated with the book and made me read it. I remember also that for so many intellectual people Paulo Coelho wasn’t considered an author and at the same time his book wasn’t considered literature. I remember that reading The Alchemist in those days wasn’t something that you would be proud to say that you are reading because the book was a mix of modern self help with religion. The other thing that I remember was when the book became a best seller in France where people read a lot and everybody was kinda in shock about it and we couldn’t help with the question: is it a really great book or does the world population find themselves in desperation. So, When I was watching Paulo Coelho’s interview with Oprah I couldn’t help to think about this phase in my life, all the emotions and stories with my best friend and it made me very emotional and brought tears to my eyes. I will be honest to say that the only book that I read from him was The Alchemist and I don’t remember almost anything regarding the story. However, every time that I see or hear about this book brings to me that moment in my life that I was trying so hard to know about myself, trying to find a career, dealing with all the unstable emotional transitions from teenager to an adult life but always laughing at my miseries along with my best friend. The Alchemist is celebrating 25 years and I am celebrating my friendship. I love you Júnior so much!!! You were and you will always be a part of my life!
Have you read any book that brings lifetime memories and emotions??
I truly believe in these words!
“There is a sentence in the Alchemist that says, ‘When you want something, the whole universe conspires to help you,'” he says. “I said, ‘I wrote this. I have to live by these words.”
