We are leaving for Hawaii this morning and while I was thinking of what to pack I realized that I never thought that flip-flops would be something seasonal in my life. In Brazil, in most of states there’s no winter and you only need a light jacket at the most and nothing else. Thinking of that I thought about Havaianas flip-flops – they are the most popular in the world, with 150 million pairs being made every year, according to Wikipedia. It’s interesting how this brand became a world phenomenon (here). Initially the Brazilian sandals were worn by the poor classes, but Havaianas have transcended that and Brazil’s borders to become an object of the “must haves”, sold at Bloomingdale’s, Nordstrom, Neiman Marcus and more. I remember when I came for the first time to the US and everybody was wearing them, even Hollywood stars. It was shocking for me because I always wore them without the glamour that I felt some people were wearing them here, it was cool and trendy at the time and still is. I remember also seeing them in Europe for the World Cup collection in 2010- they were adorned with the team colors from 17 different countries, from Brazil, to European countries to the USA.
In Brazil we don’t say flip-flops, we said Havaianas to refer to flip-flops. They have a nice website where you can create your own flip-flops mixing and matching colors and models. It’s super cool!! And they deliver around the world. For the US they have 1$ flat shipping.
Last year Havaianas had a high fashion name collaboration by Valentino giving luxury to the rubber sandals!! The Italian designer has created three different styles. Each style comes in a selection of different colors. It features studs, camouflage, bright colors and real crocodile leather straps. The flip flops range from $245 for the solid color studded pairs to $295 for the camouflage studded pairs to $895 for the crocodile leather strap pairs.
